PREFACE.
In issuing this, the twenty-fourth volume of the Cornish Marriages, the Editors wish to draw attention to the first volume of the Index Series, prepared by Mr. Terry Satterford, which is now ready, and to appeal for support in order that this useful and essential supplementary work may be continued. Of the Index Volumes only one hundred copies are printed and these are issued at one guinea each ; each volume will comprise a complete index to the combined contents of six or more volumes of Marriage Registers, that is to say, references to from 50,000 to 60,000 persons — each person being fully indexed under surname and Christian name. The first volume deals with the Marriages in the forty-five Parishes whose Registers were printed in Vols. I — VI of the Cornish Series, and consists of 197 pages of close double-columned type.

1559 to 1812.
Note. — The following entries have been extracted from three volumes. The first of them is in some respects the most perfect and the best preserved in the County. It is described on the title page as "A true Register of all Mariages, Baptisms and Burialls within the parish of Mary Magdalen, in Launceston, from the yeere of our Lord God 1559. Truely copyed out accordinge to the old Register, this present yeere, 1601. Written by John Harbert, 1601." The above description of course applies only to the entries from 1559 to 1601. The contents of the entire volume are : — Baptisms from 1559 to i67i» Marriages from 1559 to 1671, and Burials from 1559 to 1671. It is well bound and legible throughout. The second volume, consisting of parchment leaves, is also well preserved, and gives Baptisms from 1671 to 1812, Marriages from 1671 to 1753, ^nd Burials from 1671 to 1812. From 1754 to 1812 the Marriages are entered on Hard- wicke's forms in a well bound book. The Rev. T. Taylor has copied the Marriages contained in the first volume, and the Rev. C. P. Triplett, those contained in the second and third volumes. They are printed by permission of the Rev. Canon F. E. Lewis, vicar of Launceston. At Exeter, St. Mary Magdalene transcripts are preserved for the years : — 1608, 1612, 1623, 1629, a j'ear between 1631 and 1637, 1638. 1667, 1670, 1672, 1673. 1737-40, 1773-1812, except 1782, the return for 1792 being entered in the supplementary packet.

Note. — The St. Keverne record of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials is more than usually complete for the period which it covers. The various volumes are in good preservation and for the most part legible. The first is a bound book with parchment leaves, the contents of which are given on a loose leaf bearing date 30th April, 1831 :—

The second volume, which is a well-bound book with parchment leaves, gives Burials from 1678 to 1777, Baptisms from 1677 to 1777 and Marriages from 1677 to 1754.
Volumes III and IV supply the Marriages from 1754 to 1771 and from 1771 to 1812 respectively, entered in accordance with the provisions of Hardwicke's Act. Both books are well preserved and well bound.
The Rev. T. Taylor has copied the Marriages, which are hereunder printed by permission of the Rev. E. C. H. B. Norris, B.A., vicar of St. Keverne.
At Exeter are preserved St. Keverne Transcripts for the years 1597-1602, 1610, 1617, 1625 ; a fragment signed Rd. Downing ; another fragment signed John Kete ; a return date unknown, signed Miles Exelby; 1664, 1665, 1666, 1670, 1673, 1737-40 and 1773-1812.
